Windows 7

As of 2022 Microsoft has put every last nail in the coffin for Windows 7. If you are still on Windows 7 now is the time to move onto Windows 10. Windows 10 will be supported until at least October 2025 and beyond that is a complete unknown. Unfortunately as of October 2023 the free upgrade options no longer work. While we can still upgrade Windows 7 & 8 to to Windows 10 while keeping all your data and programs intact you will need to purchase a Windows license. You will typically be looking at a cost of about $125 including labor.

Windows 11

If you are on Windows 10 and wondering about going to Windows 11... DON'T! Windows 11 is plagued with so many of its own issues. If you have a convincing reason to move to 11 go ahead but don't do it just because Microsoft recommends it.

What if your computer can't run Windows 11? Well, you're in luck for now. The TPM requirement is actually rather ridiculous. TPM stands for Trusted Platform Module and the amusing thing is it can be hacked just like anything else. Self defeat. There is no good reason for Microsoft to require it outside of their own greed. If Microsoft does in fact drop support for Windows 10 in 2025 and the TPM requirement is still a thing then Microsoft will be responsible for billions of tons of e-waste. This is obviously not a good thing. So, if you are on 10, stay. If you are on 7, let's get you upgraded (though I hate to call it an upgrade).

And Linux?

Yes, this is an option! Especially as 2025 comes to an end. Various linux distributions have gotten significantly more friendly and are a great option for perfectly good hardware that may no longer be supported by Microsoft. Thankfully Eugene Computers is ahead of the curve with over 20 years experience and can help you on this journey if you so choose!
